ABOUT THE SOLUTION
VAR unites innovative technology with evidence-based practice.
The content in the VAR portal includes a practical procedure component with rationales and related tests for each topic. The content is presented in clear and precise language, using terms and expressions with consistent meanings throughout the entire database.
The complete solution consists of:
- Main module
- Additional modules
- Technology
PROCEDURES:
RATIONALES:
The rationales help users reflect on and understand the connection between what is done and why. They justify the procedures and describe the knowledge base in an early comprehensible way. The procedures are not only based on the latest research: the rationales are a synthesis of content from various knowledge forms. They include experiential knowledge, national laws, guidelines, and ethical standards, all designed to incorporate the patient perspective. The references underlying the content are cited throughout the text, with a summary reference list presented for easy access. Learn more about conent development here.
TESTS:
In VAR, we facilitate training and competence development with knowledge tests for all procedures. The knowledge tests can be used individually for fun, for self-assessment but they can also be systematically within an organisation or in education, for example, in connection with a forcus/priority area, during new hires or temporary staff recruitment to ensure competence, during an internship or as a part of a course.
ADD-ON MODULES:
VAR is constantly evolving and as of now we have two additional modules: My Skills and Mental Health (mental health nursing for healthcare workers).
CALCULATORS:
Our portal has calculators for medication management, body mass index, and weight change.
VISUALISATION:
The procedures are presented pedagogically, supplemented with illustrations and animations. The illustrations in VAR are made by certified medical illustrator Kari C. Toverud, who is one of only three in Europe with this certification. Other illustrations are made freelancer illustrator, Torun Hunnes.
VAR TECHNOLOGY
ACCESS
VAR Healthcare is a web-based solution with no technical requirements other than internet and web browser. The interface is adapted to all devices and VAR supports most modern browsers, such as:
- Chrome
- Edge
- Safari
- Firefox
In order for VAR to support a browser version, it must be supported by the provider itself. With responsive design, VAR is flexible in its use and can adapt to different devices; PC/Mac, tablets and mobile phones.
ADVANCED SEARCH ENGINE
VAR is equipped with a highly developed search engine that allows clinicians to quickly and efficiently locate the information they need, serving as a robust tool for clinical decision support. When searching for a patient issue or a risk situation, the search engine provides results that suggest relevant procedures tailored to the specific scenario.
To enhance search functionality, SNOMED CT codes (ICNP) and synonyms have been integrated, allowing users to search using alternative terms and spellings. This ensures that commonly used terms in clinical practice can be effectively utilisied as search keywords. For instance, VAR users will receive results for pulse oximetry procedures when they input terms like "blood saturation" or "sat" and for bladder irrigation when they search for "lavage".
INTEGRATION
Our technological platform is easy to integrate into other digital systems to give the user the best possible support in their daily work processes, for example in electronic patient records (EPR)/electronic health records (EHR), in digital quality systems and in learning platforms/skills platforms.
VAR ADD-ON MODULES
The procedural system is the basis of VAR. Our users inspire us to develop more content and thus we have several additional modules that support users' daily practice and work:
MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE
The first procedures relate to key points for communication with patients suffering from mental health challenges. Further content is scheduled and is being developped continously to ensure an evidence-based approach to these patient groups.
MY SKILLS
This is a digital learning resource used both during studies and in practice for further skill development to ensure evidence-based practice. It is an operationalised and digitised version of the Model for Practical Skill Performance, with a formative assessment scale linked to each individual procedure in VAR.
LOCAL PROCEDURES
Individual agencies/companies/organisations can enter their local procedures, based on the same setup as VAR. These procedures will be searchable through VAR's search engine and will be able to be integrated with electronic health records and with digital learning and skills systems.
STATISTICS
VAR offers a time-limited page view of statistics to the company's managers. This can form the basis for leadership in order to aid professional development or the strengthening of disciplines where there is a need for increased competence. The statistics do not show information at the personal or departmental level.
